CAROUSEL: packaging

The company Carousel was founded in 2013, the idea behind Carousel was simple; to create a beautiful space in the form of an art cafe with cozy interiors, warm lights, freshly brewed coffee and happy people. A place where pretty home decor products would come to life.

Carousel had just partnered with its first retail outlet-partner , Qirq Station, to start selling their products. They were looking for an effective packaging solution that would be budget friendly, stand out and could quickly be brought into production.

A graphic pattern was first created with the objective of it being used as a common element across the packaging. The inspiration for the pattern was to showcase some of the bestselling products of Carousel in a simplistic manner.

Carousel has two platforms for sale, online and retail. Since most orders came from their website it was paramount for them to continue using the pizza cardboard box as their staple shipping box. They owned a large inventory of these boxes and wanted a solution that would help them use their existing inventory yet customise it to their brand.

This is why a sleeve around the mailing box was chose, as it allowed for customisability of the existing box along with new sleeves being printed based on seasonality with minimum cuts in inventory stocks.

As mentioned, Carousel's partnership with Quirq Station brought a need for them to look at retail packaging. Since they were starting by taking their smaller products to the retail market, packaging for magnets and picture frames was done as well.

After creating multiple iterations the first option was liked best by Carousel. The retail packaging which first was designed as an envelope was switched to a card top while the product was placed in a transparent bag as the dye to be cut for the envelope wasn't a cost effective solution for the company.

The graphic pattern was going to be used on the sleeve of the mailing box as well as the tissue wrapping paper inside the box.

By the end Carousel had two new sets of packaging along with a redesign on their shipping envelopes.
