Ka nana: The Bag Project

Duration: 4 months

This project seeks to explore why handicraft products have turned from products of utility to gifting and souvenir items. The current subpar quality of these products is just the beginning of the many reasons why. This project attempts to re-examine handicrafts in terms of construction, aesthetics, utility and finesse by building connections with the customers at the same time.  It was be an attempt to connect the customer and the artisan with the respective products sold.

This project was a great opportunity to gain exposure to the various craft practices in the very state I've been brought up in. It has been a constant battle of wits with the project material choices yet this journey has introduced me to various craft forms and has also given me an understanding and appreciation for the skills and practitioners of the crafts.

This has been my first experience working with a target audience in mind and creating a product that could create a need.

The crafts explored through this project were Banana fibre weaving and Kasuti embroidery.
