Rangeen Kinaro: Graduation project

Duration: 6 months

This project aimed to explore the potentials of creating cross-collaborative processes and co-design which would work towards the building of sustainable relationships and an aiding ecosystem. Drawing from past experiences of working with craft communities the project aimed to bring a co-designed innovation to the middle class segment market. The local context for this project was to better understand working with traditional artisans in Kutch, who are well-established in their respective practices and have a wealth of knowledge to draw from generations of their design heritage.

Zaeem Mustak Ahmad Khatri was the artisan partner through this co-creation project. He currently owns his own business where he sells his bandhani creations under the label Bariq. The project worked towards creating a new collection which could be sold under his existing brand. Keeping his brand identity in mind certain guidelines were formed catering to his current market type and meeting his standards.

This project has taken inspiration from the Kutch district Mandvi, a beach town with wooden ship building a dyeing craft yet still prevalent. The final outcome is a range of garments made from cotton using dyeing techniques like clamping, Shibori and Bandhani.

Throughthe duration of the project attempts have been made to use the making process and the relationship that evolves trough this making to reflect in the final outcome. This project has been conscious while making its products that when taken to the market it draws from the artisan’s rich heritage. At the same time, it strives to push the boundaries and convey its meaning and values, of the practice, to the customer’s understanding.
